March the 9th.
Listening to the words of the prophet Jeremiah can give us an insight into the real value of fasting. He tells us that we learn to trust in the Lord, not in the things of this world. We grasp the real values which lead us to place our trust in God.
The rich man in today's gospel is presented by Jesus as one who had not learned this. He only came to realize it when after death he saw Lazarus happy and found himself empty and suffering.
Any effort we put forth to fast during Lent can be a great moment in our journey of hope. It can bring into view for us the real values that we should hold close to us.
Lord, thank you for the invitations this Lent offers me.
