May the 26th.
Today's gospel selection from the end of St. John's Gospel is the moment when Peter is confirmed as the leader of the apostles.
He has asked three times whether he loves Jesus. As he answers. Jesus responds by giving him the commission to love and tend the flock: those who gather around Jesus.
In many ways, that commission given to Peter is handed on down to each of us. The situations of our lives ask love of us. As we, like Peter, struggle to answer, we learn to live in love. As St. John says elsewhere, to live in God so that he may live in us.
Holy Spirit, come that we may better understand this truth as a fruit of this time of prayer.
